Does one need to have instrumental talent and experience to major in recording arts technology?
I’m enrolled in DeVry University in Alpharetta, Georgia, as a video game programming student, and I hate it. I’m interested in getting involved in recording arts, but I have no musical experience at all. I would love to learn to play either guitar, bass, drums, or keyboard, but even learning them now does not mean I’ll be good. I will only get good after years and years of hard practice. So, to get involved in recording arts, would I need to audition and be able to play something already?

i’m a bass player and bassing is fairly easy, but you should probably need a good ear for sound quality

Heck no, but one does need to have a very good ear for sound and subtle differences in pitch. Without that you’d be hard pressed to work in the recording industry.

But most sound techs are not musicians. So if this is your passion, go for it.

You should have a good ear for music, and learning the basics of those instruments will help–but there are jobs in music that don’t involve playing them, and it sounds like that is what you are after anyway.

hearing and playing are two different things. if you can hear something great and know it’s great enough to record then that’s okay. do you think that Dr. Dre played and instrument? He’s recorded many artists without ever knowing how to read music. Not saying that rap really counts, but it’s an example to what you’re asking. If you have a good ear, then that’s all it really takes. You can then over time learn the piano or guitar and by recording others and watching and listening, you’ll define your ear and will probably learn a lot quicker. good luck
