Occidental College’s Film & Media Studies Program combines critical studies, digital production, screenwriting, documentary studies, study abroad opportunities, and industry internships. Graduates are not only technically savvy, but also critically and socially engaged—understanding that media production and consumption are not simply matters of entertainment and box office but also constitute powerful social and ideological realms both locally and globally. The Film & Media Studies program is pioneering in its curricular partnerships with Art History and Studio Arts. These three distinct, but resonant programs are partners within a larger Art History and Visual Arts Department, linking the still comparatively young histories of film, electronic, and digital media to the aesthetic, historical, and cultural traditions of other global visual practices (painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and the like). Film & Media Studies at Occidental is distinctive for the liberal arts college experience it affords in Los Angeles, permitting students to approach media studies and production from an interdisciplinary perspective. For his internship, Daniel’s living in the dorms at George Washington University, which are just a couple of blocks away from where he works. We stopped by while driving aimlessly around D.C. that night.
Art: Your computer’s named… GREYPILGRIM?
Daniel: Yeah, that’s a Lord of the Rings allusion…
Me: Oh my god, Daniel, you are so awesome.
Art: Huh?
Me: Grey Pilgrim. Gandalf.
Art: Why did you name it that?
Daniel: It makes you name your computer… my laptop’s gray, and it goes places, like a pilgrim…

The Cataluña Museum of Contemporary Art. It’s pretty white, and there are annoying amounts of skaters that hang about the entrance.
Explaining what Billy Rennekamp does is not easy, his many simultaneous projects range from programming to art performances, so we just asked him. “I consider myself an eternal intern,” was his response. Billy has volunteered for three different artists and three different institutions in three different cities over the last three years (which seems like an art concept itself). “I admire the work of these entities and happily donate my time and energy to their causes. I understand that coordinated efforts produce the most successful results.” Besides working for others artists, he is part of many collectives – online and offline – including Loshadka.org, HandEyeCoordination.org, IndexOfPotential.net, and participated in collaborative exhibitions with artists Anne De Vries, Skye Chamberlain and Britta Thie among others. “I like to think of me and collaborators as interning for each other simultaneously.” One of his internships was with online magazine Dis, where he helped setting up their temporary Chinatown office, conceived by artist Lizzy Fitch. The concept of Dis magazine is as hard to explain as Billy’s profession, mainly because unlike common magazines, it does not distinguish between disciplines nor conform to aesthetic value systems. The Moving Image Arts Department at Santa Fe University of Art and Deign www.santafeuniversity.edu in a comprehensive program. The students learn every aspect of making a movie (both digital and film techniques). The program is very hands on, students start using equipment early on in the program. There are many Hollywood productions filmed in the college’s sound stage and students are often interns on those sets. Video Rating: 5 / 5
