Here is an important strategy. Find a Psychotherapist who will partner with you during your education to provide feedback and oversight. State laws for requirements differ, but if you are doing this, you can begin as a ‘clinical psychologist’ in some states and do counseling with supervisory oversight by a Phd. It gives you the opportunity to practice while you increase learning. I hope some of the links below help.

There are lots of variations on a psychology degree. I’m managing a library with mine; my father went to medical school with his. Psychology is an excellent major that works well for a variety of jobs (pretty much anything that involves working with people), but you need to be proactive in making sure your other coursework prepares you for a specific field. In your case, if you want to do psychotherapy, you’ll want to concentrate on the medical psychology classes (as opposed to the behavioral rats-in-boxes ones), and you’ll probably want to take a fair amount of chemistry and other science as well. Once you get to college, your academic advisor can help you plan a selection of classes that will allow you to explore the field before you lock yourself in.
