I don’t think it is always premeditated! I mean, if I find a person who needs help, I just help…it’s not that I thought about it for a long time and then did it!

Besides….how long do you have to think about it before it becomes premeditated?

I don’t think the premeditation is an issue. I think that it has much more to do with doing something kind for nothing in return – just because it is a good thing to do.
Although this reminds me of the Friends episode in which Joey and Phoebe discuss if there CAN be an unselfish act of kindness since doing something good for someone makes you feel good and therefore you DO get something in return.
    hmmm….

Hey, that’s a good take on it. Random, as in not reciprocated. I like that better. And, maybe Joey and Phoebe have a point, but I might consider the good feeling a benefit. If it promotes community and interdependence, then let’s all do it! Good illustration, snowdaisy!

I beleive its something out of the blue, and it can be something as simple as, when you’re at the grocery store and someone drops something, pick it up for them, or someone has hits the ditch and you give them a ride somewhere. Any time when you actually stop whatever it is that you may be doing, to help somebody else out who may be in need.

to me…a random act of kindness…is just doingsomething "because"…because you want to…for no other reason…not cause you have to, not cause your expecting anything back…just to make someone smile….with nt expectations back with not hidden agenda…That is MY deffinition of "random act of kindness"

I’m not sure why exactly, but I’ve always interpreted this to mean kindness to strangers. Kindness to random people on the street.

I’d like to see one reminding us to practice kindness to the ones we love, too. It’s a strange part of human nature that we seem to most hurt those we most love.

Thanks, Amy and Jennifer. I’m enjoying all the input I’m getting from people on this subject. It seems that each of us has looked at this phrase in a slightly different way. I like the richness of having all these ideas together.
